Clown of thorns
A stable production
It was summer break at a time where ash started falling from the sky. The work year was done- school was out, the backyard-empty.
Inspired by the distressing humour and grit of not only the world but the words of one Isaac Forsyth…
we thought it fitting to put on this play.
CLOWN OF THORNS (part one) follows the tale of two cousins getting to their Nanna’s birthday, her last birthday, on time. Beginning at a crucifixion on trash mountain to an old lady’s barn they discover what it’s like to birth a cow, eat shit and play God and that their Nanna was more than who they thought she was.
Freshly graduated, our budget was not exactly excessive- in fact all we spent money on was food and beers. The making of this show was predominantly made possible by pulling trash from the streets, snorkelling through recycled empires and borrowing our friends tools. After being in an institution for 1-4 years, we all felt strongly that this show didn’t need the big lights, surround sound or overdeveloped sets to engage the audience as was subconsciously taught.
There was no need to build something new.
The world of this play was to be aware of what was around us, however old and full of grit and with a little perspective and creativity, it was more telling rather, to build something different.
